(Note: This is normally taught late in first-year, reviewed in second-year. Doing these exercises requires knowledge of all four subjunctive tenses, conditionals and imperatives.)

It is important that they go to school. > È importante che vadano a scuola.
It is important that they went to school. > È importante che siano andati...
It was important that they went. > Era importante che andassero...
It was important that they had gone... Era importante che fossero andati..
If it were important, they would have gone. > Se fosse importante, sarebbero andati.
