L'IMPERATIVO (Commands)

Introduction. The Imperative is used to give orders to other people. We can address one person or several, informally (family, friends, little children, the dog) or formally (professionals, business people, strangers, older or important people). Commands in Italian can be a special form of the verb used alone. The verb in the imperative form can also be used with one or two pronouns. To be clear that these are commands, it is helpful to write them with the exclamation mark.

Summary of possible forms.

I. Verbs alone, no pronoun:

Informal forms (tu, noi, voi) are similar to present tense:
tu Ascolta!* Scendi! Finisci! Non ascoltare!
noi Ascoltiamo! Scendiamo Finiamo! Non ascoltiamo!
voi Ascoltate! Scendete! Finite! Non ascoltate!

Formal forms (lei, loro) are like the present subjunctive:
lei Ascolti! Scenda! Finisca! Non ascolti!
loro Ascoltino! Scendano! Finiscano! Non ascoltino!

II. With single object pronoun:

With Informal commands, the pronoun attaches:
Invitalo! Leggelo! Finiscilo! Non invitarlo!/non lo invitare!
Invitiamolo! Leggiamolo! Finiamolo! Non invitiamolo!
Invitatelo! Leggetelo! Finitelo! Non invitatelo!

With Formal commands, the pronoun NEVER attaches:
Lo inviti! Non lo inviti!
Lo invitino! Non lo invitino!

III. For commands with Reflexive Verbs, treat the pronouns the same way:

Informal:
Alzati! Mettiti Divertiti.. Non ti alzare.
Alziamoci! Mettiamoci Divertiamoci... Non ci alziamo
Alzatevi! Mettetevi Divertitevi... Non vi alzate.

Formal:
Si alzi, signore! Non si alzi, signore!
Si alzino, signori! Non si alzino, signori!
IV. Commands with Two Object Pronouns:

Attach double pronouns to informal commands, but never to formal:

Informal:
Portamelo! Non portarmelo!/Non me lo portare!
Portiamoglielo! Non portiamoglielo!
Portateglielo! Non portateglielo!

Formal:
Velo porti! Non ve lo porti!
Velo portino! Non ve lo portino!

V. Monosyllabic "tu" commands of common verbs:

da' di' fa' sta' va'

1. Object pronouns attach to end of verb.
2. Consonants double (except "g") when attaching pronouns.

Dammi il libro! Dammelo! BUT: Non darmelo!
Dagli la macchina! Dagliela! BUT: Non dargliela!
Dicci! BUT: Non dirci!
Fammi vedere! BUT: Non farmi vedere!

VI. Irregular Informal Forms (these are like the present subjunctive):

avere:
(tu) abbi
(voi) abbiate

essere:
(tu) sii
(voi) siate
