Double Object Pronouns

I pronomi doppi (Double Object Pronouns)

(Note: Before doing this file, you will need to have studied direct and indirect object pronouns, ne and the passato prossimo.)

Introduction. We can replace direct and indirect objects with their respective pronouns:

Direct object pronouns: mi, ti, lo, la, ci, vi, li, le
Indirect object pronouns: mi, ti, gli, le, ci, vi, gli (loro)

If both types of object occur in a sentence, we can also replace both with pronouns. When we use the double object pronouns, the indirect one always precedes the direct one:

me lo, te li, ce la, ve le, ecc.

Note that mi, ti, ci, vi and reflexive si change to me, te, ce, ve and se before the direct object pronoun. Gli, le, and loro all change to glie- before the direct object pronoun. We can also use the particella ne; this goes in the position of the direct object pronouns.

Esempi:

Serve la torta a me. = Me la serve.
...a te Te la serve.
...a lui Gliela serve.
...a lei Gliela serve.
...a voi Ve la serve.
...a noi Ce la serve.

Serve il caffé a me. = Me lo serve.
...l'aragosta a me. Me la serve.
...il maiale a me. Me lo serve.
...gli spinaci a me. Me li serve.
...delle mele a me. Me ne serve.
...dell'acqua a me. Me ne serve.
...del vino a me. Me ne serve.

non dire una sillaba (not to say a word)

Other common phrases that rely on the negatives are listed in below:
NEGATIVE PHRASES

nessuno no one, nobody
niente (nulla) nothing

nessun no, not...any

Note that nessun is used as an adjective, and must agree in gender and number with the thing that it describes. Moreover, nessun and niente usually follow the verb when they act as the object. When one of these words is the subject of the sentence, its position can vary:

Nessuno parla. (No one speaks.)
Niente ci piace. (We like nothing at all.)
Non parla nessuno. (No one speaks.)

To review the negatives, compare the two sets of phrases in the following table:

What is a reflexive verb (verbo riflessivo)? A verb is reflexive when the action carried out by the subject is performed on the same subject. Not all verbs are reflexive. In order to make a verb reflexive, drop the -e of its infinitive ending and add the pronoun si. For example, pettinare (to comb) becomes pettinarsi (to comb oneself) in the reflexive. Si is an additional pronoun, known as the reflexive pronoun, which is needed when conjugating reflexive verbs.

The reflexive pronouns (i pronomi reflessivi), mi, ti, si, ci, vi, si, are identical in form to direct object pronouns, except for the third-person form si (which is the same in the singular and in the plural). The following table includes the reflexive pronouns in Italian.

REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS
PERSON SINGULAR PLURAL
I mi (myself) ci (ourselves)
II ti (yourself) vi (yourselves)
III si (himself; herself; itself; yourself, formal) si (themselves; yourselves, formal)

To see how reflexive pronouns work with verbs, see a sample conjugation of lavarsi (to wash oneself) in the table below.

CONJUGATION OF THE VERB LAVARSI (TO WASH ONESELF)
PERSON SINGULAR PLURAL
I (io) mi lavo (noi) ci laviamo
II (tu) ti lavi (voi) vi lavate
III (lui, lei, Lei) si lava (loro, Loro) si lavano

Just like direct object pronouns, reflexive pronouns are placed before a conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive. Note that the reflexive pronoun agrees with the subject even when attached to the infinitive:

Mi alzo. (I'm getting up.) Voglio alzarmi./Mi voglio alzare. (I want to get up.)

Mi, ti, si, and vi may drop the i before another vowel or an h and replace it with an apostrophe. Ci may drop the i only before another i or an e:

Voi v'arrabbiate facilmente. (You get angry easily.)
I ragazzi s'alzano alle sette. (The boys woke up at seven o'clock.)
A casa, m'annoio. (At home, I get bored.)

For a list of common reflexive verbs in Italian, see the following table.

COMMON REFLEXIVE VERBS
accorgersi (di) to notice
addormentarsi to fall asleep
alzarsi to get up
arrabbiarsi to get angry
chiamarsi to be named
coprirsi to cover oneself
divertirsi to have fun, to enjoy oneself
farsi il bagno to bathe oneself
farsi la doccia to take a shower
farsi male to get hurt, hurt oneself
innamorarsi (di) to fall in love with
lavarsi to wash oneself
laurearsi to graduate
mettersi to put (clothing) on
pettinarsi to comb one's hair
radersi to shave
sbarbarsi to shave
sedersi to sit down
sentirsi to feel
spogliarsi to undress
sposarsi (con) to get married
svegliarsi to wake up
vestirsi to get dressed

Remember that some reflexive verbs can be used nonreflexively—without the reflexive pronouns. In this case, their meaning changes:

Tu ti alzi. (You get up.)
Tu alzi la sedia. (You lift the chair.)

Reflexive Pronouns

Reflexive Pronouns

In a reflexive sentence the action of the verb reverts to the subject, as in the following examples: I wash myself. They enjoy themselves. In reflexive sentences, Italian verbs, like English verbs, are conjugated with reflexive pronouns.

Reflexive pronouns (i pronomi riflessivi) are identical in form to direct object pronouns, except for the third person form si (the third person singular and plural form).
SINGULAR PLURAL
mi (myself) ci (ourselves)
ti (yourself) vi (yourselves)
si (himself, herself, itself, yourself )(formal)) si (themselves, yourselves (formal))

Just like direct object pronouns, reflexive pronouns are placed before a conjugated verb or attached to the infinitive. If the infinitive is preceded by a form of dovere, potere, or volere, the reflexive pronoun is either attached to the infinitive (which drops its final –e) or placed before the conjugated verb. Note that the reflexive pronoun agrees with the subject even when attached to the infinitive.

Mi alzo. (I’m getting up.)
Voglio alzarmi. Mi voglio alzare. (I want to get up.)

Mi, ti, si, and vi may drop the i before another vowel or an h and replace it with an apostrophe. Ci may drop the i only before an i or e.

Si lava tutti i giorni. (He washes himself every day.)
Ci divertiamo molto qui. (We enjoy ourselves a lot here.)
A casa, m’annoio. (At home, I get bored.)

Combining Direct and Indirect Pronouns(直接目的語代名詞 + 間接目的語代名詞の結合形)

Combining Direct and Indirect Pronouns

update:
語順は必ず、間接(誰々に)+直接(それ/それらを)となる。mi、ti、ci、vi は、次に lo、la、li、le、ne がくると、me、te、ce、ve に変わる。

gli/le(彼/彼女に)は lo、la、li、le、ne と結合して glie- と一語になる。

Me lo può fare vedere? 私にそれらを見せてもらえませんか。
Ho dimenticato i tuoi CD. Te li porterò domani. 君のCDを忘れてきてしまった。明日もってくるよ。
Pronto, sono Silvia. C'è Marco? - Si, te lo passo subito. はい、すぐに代わります。
Se non lo vuoi dire a Piero, glielo dirò io. 君がピエーロに言いたくないなら、僕が言うよ。
Hai visto la sciarpa di Angela? Gliel'ho regalata io! プレゼントしたのは僕だよ。

There are many times when the same verb has both a direct object pronoun and indirect object pronoun. Usually, the indirect object pronoun precedes the direct object pronoun and the indirect object pronouns mi, ti, ci, and vi change to me, te, ce, and ve:

Renato porta il libro a me. (Renato brings the book to me.)
Renato me lo porta. (Renato brings it to me.)
Il professore insegna la lezione a voi. (The professor teaches the lesson to you.)
Il professore vi l'insegna. (The professor teaches you the lesson.)

For a complete chart of all the double object pronouns, see the table below.

Note the economy in words: gli, le, and Le become glie- before direct object pronouns and before ne, and combine with them to become one word.

Direct object nouns and pronouns answer the question what? or whom? Indirect object nouns and pronouns answer the question to whom? or for whom? In English the word to is often omitted: We gave a cookbook to Uncle John.— We gave Uncle John a cookbook. In Italian, the preposition a is always used before an indirect object noun.

Abbiamo regalato un libro di cucina allo zio Giovanni. (We gave a cookbook to Uncle John.)
Perché non regali un profumo alla mamma? (Why don't you give Mother some perfume?)
Puoi spiegare questa ricetta a Paolo? (Can you explain this recipe to Paul?)

Indirect object pronouns (i pronomi indiretti) replace indirect object nouns. They are identical in form to direct object pronouns, except for the third person forms gli, le, and loro.

SINGULARPLURAL
mi (to/for) meci (to/for) us
ti (to/for) youvi (to/for) you
Le (to/for) you (formal m. and f.)Loro (to/for) you (form., m. and f.)
gli (to/for) himloro (to/for) them
le (to/for) her

Indirect object pronouns, like direct object pronouns, precede a conjugated verb, except for loro and Loro, which follow the verb.

Le ho dato tre ricette. (I gave her three recipes.)
Ci offrono un caffè. (They offer us a cup of coffee.)
Parliamo loro domani. (We'll talk to them tomorrow.)
Che cosa regali allo zio Giovanni? (What are you giving Uncle John?)
Gli regalo un libro di cucina. (I'll give him a cookbook.)

Indirect object pronouns are attached to an infinitive, and the –e of the infinitive is dropped.

Non ho tempo di parlargli. (I have no time to talk to him.)

If the infinitive is preceded by a form of dovere, potere, or volere, the indirect object pronoun is either attached to the infinitive (after the –e is dropped or placed before the conjugated verb).

Voglio parlargli. Gli voglio parlare. I want to talk to him.

Le and gli never elide before a verb beginning with a vowel or an h.

Le offro un caffè (I offer her a cup of coffee.)
Gli hanno detto «Ciao!» (They said "Ciao!" to him.)

Mi guarda fisso. 見つめる
Li ho conosciuti bene.
Non mi hanno mai salutato.

Transitive verbs take direct objects—which can be direct object pronouns (i pronomi diretti). These pronouns are the person or thing affected by the action of the transitive verb and answer the question what? or whom? The forms of the Italian direct object pronouns appear in the following table.
SINGULARPLURAL
mi = meci = us
ti = you (informal)vi = you (informal)
La = you (formal m. and f.)Li = you (form., m.)
 Le = you (form., f.)
lo = him, itli = them (m. and f.)
la = her, itle = them (f.)

In Italian, a direct object pronoun is placed immediately before a conjugated verb:

Se vediamo i ragazzi, li invitiamo. (If we see the boys, we'll invite them.)
Compra la frutta e la mangia. (He buys the fruit and eats it.)

The only exception to that is when a sentence contains an infinitive. In this case, the object pronoun is attached to the end of it (note that the final -e of the infinitive is dropped):

È importante mangiarla ogni giorno. (It is important to eat it every day.)
È una buon'idea invitarli. (It's a good idea to invite them.)

In a negative sentence, the word non must come before the object pronoun:

Non la mangiano. (They don't eat it.)
Perché non li inviti? (Why don't you invite them?)

It is possible (but not necessary) to elide singular direct-object pronouns in front of verbs that begin with a vowel or forms of avere that begin with an h. However, the plural forms li and le are never elided:

M'ama, non m'ama. [Mi ama, non mi ama.] (He loves me, he loves me not.)
Il passaporto? Loro non l'hanno [lo hanno]. (The passport? They don't have it.)

A few Italian verbs that take a direct object, such as ascoltare, aspettare, cercare, and guardare, correspond to English verbs that are used with prepositions (to listen to, to wait for, to look for, to look at). Compare the following:

Chi cerchi? (Who are you looking for?)
Cerco il mio ragazzo. (I'm looking for my boyfriend.)
Lo cerco già da mezz'ora! (I've been looking for him for half an hour!)

Object pronouns are attached to ecco (here) to express the phrases "here I am," "here you are," "here he is," and so on:

Dov'è la signorina? Eccola! (Where is the young woman? Here she is!)
Hai trovato le chiavi? Sì, eccole! (Have you found the keys? Yes, here they are!)

Interrogative Pronouns(疑問代名詞)

Interrogative Pronouns

Sometimes interrogatives replace nouns altogether, and act as interrogative pronouns that introduce a question. They are:
INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS
ITALIAN ENGLISH EXAMPLE
Chi? (Who? Whom?) Chi sei?
Che/Che cosa/Cosa? (What?) Cosa dici?
Quale? (Which (one/s)?) Quale giornali vuoi?

Chi? is invariable and used exclusively when referring to people: Chi ha parlato? Di chi stai ridendo? The gender of the pronoun chi is usually recognized in context or by the agreement of the adjective or participle. Chi hai salutato per prima/primo?

Che? or che cosa? refers only to a thing and has the significance of quale/i cose? Che (che cosa) vuoi? Che cosa desideri di più dalla vita?

Che often appears in the interrogative phrase che cosa? (what/which thing?), though sometimes one of these two words may be dropped. The following three phrases are all equally correct:

Che cosa bevi? (What are you drinking?)
Che dici? (What are you saying?)
Cosa fanno i bambini? (What are the children doing?)

Quale? is used to indicate people, animals, or things. It expresses "What is...?" when the answer involves a choice, or when one requests information such as a name, telephone number, or address. Quale? is invariable in gender. Quale di voi ha studiato a Parigi? Quale vuoi conservare di queste due fotografie?

Interrogative Prepositions In Italian, a question never ends with a preposition. Prepositions such as a, di, con, and per always precede the interrogative chi (who).

A chi scrivi? (To whom are you writing?)
Di chi sono queste chiavi? (Whose keys are these?)
Con chi escono stasera? (Who(m) are they going out with tonight?)
